INSPIRATION

PENANG MEDIATHEQUE ( GREENHOUSE )

TELUK BAHANG

For my last semester final design project, I created a mediatheque located at Tropical Spice Garden, Teluk Bahang, Penang. The mediatheque is an exhibition space where Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics are taken into consideration.

Penang is a state of Malaysia located on the northwest coast of peninsular Malaysia, by the strait of Malacca. A fascinating fusion of the east and west, Penang embraces modernity while retaining its tradition and old world charm. These are reflected in its harmonious. To me, it’s no secret that modern day life is filled with stress. Sometimes, we just want to get away from it all and surround ourselves with calm including shrines amid a canopy of trees. My design and idea are inspired from the urban stress.

PENANG - URBAN STRESS

After the site visit, I am inspired by the surrounding natural environment. My mediatheque is shaped to harmonize with its surrounding as nature is manifest there and make it part of the spice garden. Seeing all the leaves peacefully fallen and landed on the earth. There is no external influences just the pure mother nature so inspired me. This concept inspired me because I think it is important to relate the building with the site context. Therefore, my design concept is more towards comfortably and close to nature.

FALLEN LEAVES

FEELING RELAX AND CLOSE TO NATURE

I am inspired by the leaves fall off trees in layer form by nature wind. This inspired me to do in layer form. Layered space can minimize complexity by separating functions into different space of concern bringing people from one space to another space.

The lattice screen modify leaves vein. It is transparent with the intentions of designing a transparent cultural media center to allow complete visibility and transparency to the surrounding (close to nature).

It is a flow. The space inside are all equipped with high technology to get the idea of tree plants. In addition, visitors can experience different effects and feelings throughout the mediatheque. The spaces created in the mediatheque helps to deliver messages to the visitors about different kind of plants. After that pay a visit to the greenhouse to experience the plants in real with the sense of touch and feel.

The projections featured a jungle theme to maximize the concept of the night

Leaf- shaped screens reflecting pools of multicolored light. Installed a different heights throughout the room.

Below are the sketches of my design

For me, design inspiration comes from everywhere. Nowadays, we usually find inspiration through internet. For instance, archdaily, pinterest, google and youtube. There are a lot of ideas and inspiration we will get while exploring these website.

Thank you.
