Public Space In Gora Pulawska

SPACE AND PLACE

Public space is a social space that is generally open and accessible to people. Roads (including the pavement), public squares and beaches are typically considered public space and is vital to human interaction WHEREAS the undeveloped lands in villages and cities are like air bubbles or holes in a dense net. These “free space bubbles” harbor great potential for transformation into well-designed urban spaces that meet the needs of residents and visitors.

One of the example where the current designer that has redefined the idea of public space is the public space in Gora Pulawska. Local authorities decided to transform the undeveloped piece of land in the center of Gora Pulawska into recreational space and meeting point for the village residents. The designer’s intention was to create a new square, which would be unique to its users. It should serve them well and meet their needs in every possible way.

To me, the space here has created a more meaningful sense of place for the village residents. This is because several different zones have been designed, each intended for either leisure or recreational purposes. Village residents can choose between different zones for relaxation or meetings. In my opinion, the great design here invites people to relate to and use the environment as a stage for human interrelation and communication.

There is an open area with numerous benches, meant for small gatherings or outdoor events. There are also covered arbours with tables and seats intended for the residents to integrate, and finally there are large platform benches, where one can sit back and spend time in larger groups.

I feel that diverse social needs are met through the use of different landscaping elements.

Besides, the whole space has been equipped with bike racks and information boards. As for me the bike racks can encourage a healthy lifestyle and provide a sustainable of mobility. The public space here has made use of the landscaping elements such as pergolas, benches, lanterns, bins and are made of corten steel. Benches are covered with light coloured oak wood. And the entire project is complemented with the greenery even made the space become more meaningful. Numerous birches and colourful bushes have been planted on both sides of the central axis. The embankment above the square has also been covered with decorative vegetation, formed in colourful stripes. The space will also provide isolation from the busy and noisy arterial route, creating a pleasant and ambience.

I think that safety is a major criteria for the success of the public space. Meanwhile the public space in Gora Pulawska creating a sense of safety through lightning. The lighting which will create a welcome and pleasant environment. The main light is provided by tall, slender lanterns whose design is minimalist and has a modern touch. The lamps located in the floor complete the scenery with ambient light.

In my opinion, the functional differentiation of space, the use of sustainable and upstanding materials and the interesting greenery arrangement, all add up to a newly completed center of Gora Pulawska.
