The movie started off with James T. Kirk which was played by Chris Pine, having a discussion with the dominant and authoritative group of aliens which turned out to be small but cute creatures. Thanks to the way they played with the perspective, it made them look really huge and scary but in the end created a good laugh to start off with.

The first act of the movie which was the set-up is pretty straight forward and obvious to me. It was a story about frontierism, adventure, optimism and fun. The main character, Captain Kirk was the focus of Act 1- The Set-Up. The movie placed the captain in a rather difficult position. One of the Starfleet high mucky-mucks asked Captain Kirk whether he would want to give up his captain’s seat for a higher authority desk job on the eve of his 30th birthday. “There’s no relative direction in the vastness of space. There’s only you”, were the words that the commander said which spurred Kirk to look deeper into himself. Somehow he doesn’t like being behind a desk but rather commanding a ship of his own as it is more adventurous lifestyle. To achieve this Act 1, the script writer introduce a situation into this introduction. Apparently an escape pod drifts out of a nearby uncharted nebula which was the cause for Kalara’s ship floating towards the Yorktown. This in respond sparked a rescue mission as Captain Kirk decides to help her instead of being promoted. This is the current goal of the movie.

Next Act 2 was depicted as the USS Enterprise which was on a resupply stop over at Yorktown, travelled towards the unknown nebula in search of Kalaras’ ship. The ship was in it’s third year of a five year mission. With all the risk and knowing that the nebula was an uncharted territory, Captain Kirk decides to head into the vast wilderness to help Kalara. This rescue mission soon turns into an ambush when the Enterprise was overwhelmed by this massive swarm of ships which were like killer bees. The ship was easily torn apart. Escape pods were also caught by the swarm and brought back to feed Krall’s thirst. The rescue mission continues back and forth as they had to secure this ancient relic called an Abronath. Captain Kirk also finds out that Kalara was an ally of Krall when she attempts to retrieve the Abronath herself. Other characters were also introduced more into detail in Act 2. Jaylah, another important character in the movie was introduced in the development stages and she played an important role in helping to defeat Krall. Somehow, there has been a grounded USS Franklin ship on this wasted planet which was kept hidden by Jaylah’s reflective technology which made the ship invisible. Meanwhile, Krall forces a member of Kirk's crew to hand over the Abronath that she had kept hidden for Kirk in her head/hair. The Abronath is the missing half of an ancient bioweapon, created by the planet's original inhabitants. It can instantaneously disintegrate a humanoid. With the device now complete, Krall intends to attack Yorktown and kill its inhabitants, and, using its advanced technology, go on to attack the Federation. Now Captain Kirk must plan a way to unite and defeat Krall.

Finally comes Act 3. Problems such as captured crews were rescued, the non-functioning ship was fixed by Jaylah and Montgomery Scott is ready to be airborne and getting of the planet was successful. Now the last part was to prevent the destruction of Yorktown and other planets within the The United Federation of Planets. They find out that Krall’s swarm can be disrupted by Very high Frequency (VHF) sounds. They played an old song called Sabotage by Beastie Boys which instantly cause the swarm to collide with each other destroying most of them. Krall and his remaining officers managed to get into Yorktown and almost annihilate the whole planet with the Abronath, an ancient bioweapon. Turns out that Krall was a pre-Federation human soldier named Edison who became disillusioned after the new Federation demanded him to cooperate with former enemies and not go to war. He rejected their principles of unity and cooperation but his plans to destroy the Federation came to an end when Kirk caused the weapon and Krall to be sucked out into space which gave him the taste of his own medicine. Spock and McCoy then came to the rescue at the last moment preventing Captain Kirk to be sucked out into space as well.

Act 3 came to a perfect end to me as everything was concluded in a happy atmosphere. Kirk had declined the Vice Admiral position and chose to stay as the Captain of Enterprise. Spock on the other hand resumes his relationship with Uhura. Jaylah was over delighted when she was accepted into Starfleet Academy through Captain Kirk’s recommendation and finally, they all celebrated Captain Kirk’s birthday. Even the Enterprise was being rebuilt in the last scene just to satisfy all the problems. I did not feel that there was going to be another Star Trek movie as the director did not intend to I guess. This movie was a good introduction to Star Trek to me as I have never watched a Star Trek episode before. I might get into watching Science Fiction movies but not anytime soon as my expectations would be rather high due to this movie. In conclusion, this was an interesting movie as it played with our imaginations and gave us alternate ways of thinking not just in the architectural part but also inwardly as a human being in search of our identity.
