MATRA

28TH ARCHITECTURE STUDENT WORKSHOP

Doesn’t this worry you? Well it has been worrying me since I was in form3. Hope it’s not too late to make a difference in this planet just like how Ar. Madhura is doing right now. Since then I always wanted to be someone that could change the world (sounds so cliché right? :p) and make a difference at least. I begin to take interest in the effects of global warming quite some years back. I didn’t know how I was going to play a part in this mission to safe planet Earth but somehow, I feel that this is one of the path that could have a positive impact on the environment as we are the designers of this Earth.

The talk by Ar. Madhura Prematilleke gave an insight to the little things that could be done to bring a difference to this built environment. Though his methods are simple and practical in nature, it works! As he said, “Ordinary is the new special”. Madhura’s manifesto serves as a reminder to us future architects of the choices we can make towards building a more green and eco-friendly environment.

One of the first few things that I got at the beginning of his talk was that building with glass was possible. He showed us one of his project, Villa Maggona, a simple get away that blended into nature which lies on the southern coast of Sri Lanka. The villa was designed in a way that made it well ventilated naturally and had little barrier from the internal and external spaces. This made the transition from indoors to outdoors very easy. Another point which he stressed on over and over again was that the building had to be shaded naturally by trees. This is a very effective way of keeping the microclimate of this site cooler.

Madhura made it clear to us that in our climate, building with glass is actually very much possible. The only thing is we need to follow to some ideas. Whenever he designs a glass building, he tries to keep its volume small and slim. This is to facilitate better cross ventilation and easier natural lighting of spaces. This in return helps reduce the cost to heat or cool the building and thus helps the environment. Besides that, the most important thing that he mentioned was to have are trees! He repeated this several times in his speech till the first thing that came to my mind was UCSI North Wing. The architect (if he was even one) that designed this campus obviously did not take into consideration of the intensity of the sun as though this building was in some cold country. There really isn’t much trees within UCSI to start off with. The trees at the car park are miserably small as well as the trees around UCSI. In the end, shading devices such as blinds and nettings had to be places around the university. Well we could all learn from mistakes.

Madhura, the man that strives to build up Sri Lanka, a beautiful city struck by disaster, has help shape the way we design spaces into places. His ideas may be simple but the impact is substantial.

This looks rather worrying...
