Profile

Srinivasa Ramanujan
(born December 22, 1887, Erode, India—diedApril 26,1920, Kumbakonam).
.Indian mathematician who was self-taught and had an uncanny mathematical manipulative ability.
This movie is a biographical drama film based on a real-life character Srinivasa Ramanujan, a self- taught Indian
mathematician whose contributions to the field were
considered massive enough. Ramanujan, played by Dev Patel is the main character of this movie where whole movie is talking about his life and his journey in achieving his goals. He’s the
protagonist who travels the journey in the story, bringing
people ups and downs through out the whole movie.

The movie started with how genius he’s in the field of mathematics even he wasn’t
highly educated, he was so gifted. Being born in a poor family, he never gave up in
mathematics even though for his family, there’s no future if he keep on doing
research in mathematics. During sometimes, he would loves mathematics more than his family. There’s no easy path to achieve your goals, just like Ramanujan. Racism
was the biggest challenge for Ramanujan during that time due to east and west
conflict. As a Indian in London, it’s not easy to survive during that time, racism fromboss, from colleague and people around. They won’t treat you the same way as they
treat white people. And i can felt how difficult Ramanujan is for that situation.
Luckily he has found some true friends there.
I admire how Ramanujan could go through all these challenges , with his high IQ andEQ. Although he always being rejected due to his race, he never show any bad temper on people even though his family. He’s so kind and know how to control his
temper as well. This movie has portrait so many good values that we can learn from him including dedication, gratitude, optimism and more. With these positive moral
values that he has, he’s able to make it into Trinity College where it’s the best
institution in this world.
The cast design is very well as he taught us so much positive things especially the spirit of never give up. This movie has show how
he changes from a man from a poor family to a man who knew infinity. Although the ending of this movie was pretty easily
predicted, but i think his death has create a great effect where people will tend to appreciate him more. Most of the people wouldn’t appreciate things until you started to lose it so i think the ending part of this movie was designed to let us to appreciate how great
Ramanujan is. It’s quite a touching ending though.
He’s living in Madras,India together with his wife and mother. On 14 July 1909,
Ramanujan married a ten year old girl, Srimathi Janaki. In this movie, Ramanujan’s wasa minor character that act as a typical wife of a man. She was a romance character in
this movie as well . Janaki was a little bit jealous about how much Ramanjan loves
mathematics compare to her. She was to portrait how much a man loves mathematics
compare to a human. Being a young couple, the relationship between Ramanujan and
Janaki is not that close, maybe because of Ramanujan’s passion towards mathematics?
They sleep in seperate bed and he would spend more time on mathematics compare to
Janaki.

Obviously, Janaki loves Ramanujan very much but at the end she left Ramanujan because of some misunderstanding. I don’t think it’s Ramanujan ‘s fault that causes the leaving of Janaki because a man with greater ambition is most attractive. As a wife, she should
play her responsibility to support him and going through ups and downs together with
him. It’s normal that a wife will worry about his man when he’s not around, I can
understand that. Without these dramatic story, it won’t show how difficult it is to sacrifice time with family in order to achieve his goals.

The other minor character that plays an important role in this movie isRamanujan’s mother, Komalatammal. She was a housewife and also
sang at local temple. Her role is consider important because she’s the
one who educate and feed Ramanujan since small. The strongest
influence of Komalatammal to his son was the strong belief of religious.I believe that Ramanujan’s mother has taught him a lot regarding
religion. She shaped who Ramanujan is with all positive values that canlearn from their religion.
The last character that i would like to discuss about is Ramanujan’s belief, Narasimha, the
god of protection. It’s weird to include a god as one of the character of this movie but i think Narasimha is so important for Ramanujan. Narasimha is the guidance of Ramanujan in his whole life. The talent of being so good in mathematics was also a gift from Narasimha too.
Without the belief of god, Ramanujan might not be as good as he was. The sick of Narasimhawas discussed as part of punishment from the God, whether it’s true or not, it depends. But
the main idea is, even though we’re open minded or more developed as compare to old time,we shouldn’t forgot about our religion. Believe in what you believe but not too much just
like Ramanujan’s mother. God will be our guidance when we’re lost in the path of achieving our own dream.
“An equation has no meaning to me unless it expresses a thought of God”
-Srnivasa Ramanujan-
In a nutshell, Ramanujan’s family is one of the element that contribute to the growth of whole movie. He sacrifices time together
with family by leaving India and go to London which is 6000 miles away. Struggling and conflict can be seen between he and his
family. Without these scene, people couldn’t feel how much Ramanujan has sacrificed throughout the journey. This is based of real
life story, so I think the characters are real and well played because I can feel the realistic of the character of the casts.
She kept all the letters that Ramanujan had send to Janaki to prevent her from disturbing Ramanujan. After some times, Janaki feel that she was being abandoned by Ramanujan and she decided to left Ramanujan and go back to her own house. There’s no reason for her to do that, what’s the point? As a mother, she should loves and take care of Janaki when Ramanujan is not around. She treat Janaki even worst than treating a stranger. There’s no love can be found between Komalatammal and Janaki. This character should be improved by adding some positive value in. Perhaps she could realize her fault and started to like Janaki? Perhaps she could support her son more?
One thing that I disagree the most about Ramanujan’s mother is that her mind is so closed. The way she treat Janaki is totally unacceptable
for me.
