Be a Thinker

It was the best experiences taking theory class throughout the semester. It has widened my horizon in viewing things which is way more interesting and intuitive than history class. Can you imagine yourself watching movie with whole bunch of your classmates as well as your lecture straight after the class?! Or can you even imagine yourself rushing for a single blogpost before the class end during every theories class? Certainly not!

Apart from all these super happening experience, Theories of Architecture taught me many valuable lessons about how to be a thinker, not just a designer, an architect.

Throughout the whole lesson, my definition of Architecture as of this moment has greatly changed. I first thought of an architect as just a designer of a building. I only thought of the architect as the one who decorates the exterior and interior faces of the building. In fact, architect is a real thinker and architectural thinking is the thing that “forge” a building.

Never stop learning

Always remain open to learning all the time. We have to learn to keep up with everything that is happening around us. This solid 14 weeks had delivered a very important message to me is that I am still lacking of what I should have as an architecture student. I think we must continually look for ways to improve ourselves because we are the one who serve the community and provides them a comfortable and quality living space.

-I’ve learned-

Five senses x Architecture

A talk by industrial designer, Jinsop Lee about the importance of incorporating all your senses and how it affects your experiences. He started off with an example from his time in University when he was set to create a solar powered clock. However, his friend, Chris, created a more complex idea using by incorporating more than one sense. There are many designers have mainly focused on making things look good and a little bit of touch but ignored the other three senses. Jinsop Lee aims to apply his theory to future design ideas and hopes to inspire others to do the same. I found it very inspiring and the way he delivered the message is out of my expectation especially using a solar power clock as an example. I have to say again that Five sense is my FAVOURITE lecture series ever.

Be sensitive and observant

Before this, wherever I go I will only observe the beautiful things or anything that comes to me from the first sight. But now I am getting more sensitive to the ambience as well. I will try to imagine myself blindfolded every time even before I step in to the space regardless a building or an alley. It really helps in my studies especially in construction, services and design class which I can apply what I see into it. So I think being observant and sensitive is part of the learning as well.

However, there is always one thing that never changed is that to me architecture is about problem solving. A building is designed based on architects' ideal understanding of what a modern or a sustainable city should be like. If there is a problem, we solve it and help the people to adapt the living.

I am abit emotional while writing this blog, the 16th blog post also the last blog. I still remember when Ms. Sue said this could most probably be her last subject with us. Anyway, thank you for giving us a wonderful lecture. *imagine those preparations behind every lecture note* You are the best!

So this brings an end,

The above are my perceptions,

So I’ve learned how to “watch” a movie,

So this is how cool class is,

And so this is how cool Ms. Sue is!
